A League of Nation meeting was held at Blackburn on Sunday, 26 January 1919 under the auspices of the local Wesleyan Mission. Rev. S. W. Hughes advocated the League of Nations. He pointed out that a million British soldiers had died, not that a few people might prosper, but that they might make the world a new place to live in. They need to ‘sweep away the old system that ultimately led to the deaths of so many men.’ He added that they must keep the ‘firebrands and fire-eating politicians’ out of positions of responsibility.
