Lancaster took part in the No More War demonstrations being held nationally and internationally on the weekend of 28 and 29 July 1923. Members of the Lancaster League of Nations Union helped to organise the event. The local press reported how children played a prominent part locally. Three platforms were erected on the Giant Axe field. Speakers included Selina Cooper from Nelson and Dan Irving, MP for Burnley. Solidarity greetings were received from many organisations including the National League of Disabled Soldiers in Germany and Friends of Peace in Germany.
The ‘Lancaster Guardian’ explained that the demonstrations were timed to coincide with the ninth anniversary of the outbreak of the 1914-18 war, and that the following countries were taking part: America, Canada, New Zealand, France, Denmark, Russia, India, Italy, Switzerland, Sweden, Austria, Germany, Australia, Holland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Norway and Belgium.
