Rev. Thomas Murphy, Rector of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Skerton, was educated at Upholland College, Lancashire. After working as a priest at a number of Lancashire churches including St. Peter’s, Lancaster, he moved to St. Joseph’s, Skerton, in 1902. At his funeral in 1924, Archbishop Whiteside made a particular point that ‘he was deeply interested in the Lancaster League of Nations Union, and served on the Executive’ (from the beginning). He was apparently a possible candidate for a role at the Cathedral when the prospective new diocese was established which he did not live to see. At the AGM after his death, the Secretary, Mrs Dowbiggin, made a special mention of his death, saying that he had taken a real interest in the League.
